This client, on Carlton Road in Bethel Park was in need of a solution for a member of the house that uses a wheelchair. They had the ramp built and could use it in case of an emergency, but if they needed to push the wheelchair across the lawn, it would be an absolute struggle, especially with the drainage issues in that section of the lawn.
The homeowners didn't want to have poured concrete. They were looking for the path to be a consistent 5 feet wide and to have a 2 inch high lip bordering it so that there would be a "bumper" so the wheelchair wouldn't go over the side. There is a 15 1/2 inch rise from the bottom of the wheelchair ramp to the walkway on the side of the house. They also wanted it to be angled in this way and for the pavers to have a consistent line down the middle to help guide whoever is moving the wheelchair.
Could this have been done with concrete? Sure, but with a paver system, if a block shifts, we can remediate that easily compared to shifting and cracking concrete.
The homeowners went with the Beacon Hill Smooth style in Opal from Unilock.
We think it turned out incredible and everyone loves it!
